Photographing for a good cause! The 3rd Annual Dubuque's Cruisin For A Cure Car Show

Image
I'm excited to finally share that I have been offered the opportunity to serve as an official event sponsor and photographer for the 3rd Annual Dubuque's Cruisin For A Cure Car Show in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday June 2, 2013. It's scheduled to go on, rain or shine, from 10 am-3 pm in the Kennedy Mall parking lot next to Richardson Motors off JFK Road. This event should be a fun one not only for myself but for everyone that comes out--especially that it's being put on for a great cause! All of the proceeds from the event benefit Dubuque's Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society ! Please check out the website for the event to learn more about it:  http://www.dbqcruisinforacure.com/ . One other really neat thing about taking part in this event is that it has been chosen as one of KCRG's Show You Care events for this spring/summer. Learn more about this awesome recognition here:  http://www.kcrg.com/care . If you'd like to know more about the...

Waterloo Photographer Speaks to Northern Iowa College Photojournalism Students

Image
If there's one thing out there that I love to do as much as if not more than photography it's speaking to others about photography. I love to try to inspire others to really invest their time and energy into photography and perhaps a lifelong career in a photography related field. So when I was contacted recently about speaking to University of Northern Iowa photojournalism students I jumped at the opportunity. I didn't have much time to really think about it as I was asked about an hour before the class met. Short notice or not, this was too awesome to pass up. During the class I presented some examples of my work and discussed how I got to where I'm at now. I stressed that my talents didn't come overnight nor is photography as glamorous as it appears in movies or on TV; there is a lot of work involved, especially before and after a shoot/event. While this was a photojournalism class I also shared with them some of my portrait work and other work from ot...

In 15 Years of Sports Photography: A First!

Image
With 15 years of experience shooting sports of all sorts I thought I had experienced just about everything possible. Then Saturday happened. Both sides of the gym were packed with fans ready to erupt, like shown above, in support for its respective team! I was court-side with my camera for the highly anticipated matchup between MFL MarMac and Cascade in boys playoff basketball. There was an estimated 2,000+ people in attendance to take in the big game in the gorgeous gym at West Delaware High School in Manchester. I was shooting for Sports Spotlight , a Des Moines based publication that spotlights high school and collegiate athletics across the state. It was a pretty big game as the winner would punch its ticket to the state basketball tournament in Des Moines and the loser would see its season end. (Congrats to the MFL MarMac boys for winning the game...photos HERE !) A photo from the MFL MarMac game against Beckman a few days earlier. I hadn't photographe...

Hitting 2,000 Facebook Fans!

Image
Years ago, I was just a kid with a camera and a desire to shoot sports. I got my start in a Photography class that I took as an elective while in high school at West Delaware High School in Manchester (great school by the way, 2000 graduate!). The year was 1998. Or maybe it was 1999. I guess I'm getting old as my memory isn't working well this morning. =) Well anyway, the point is, Facebook and the age of social media was years down the road. So even though I hadn't thought of myself as a business just yet I was laying the groundwork to where I'd hope to be down the road. But to think that one day I'd have over 2,000 people that would not only declare that they like my work but that they'd like it enough to get updates about it so they could see it (and I'm sure judge it) on a daily--and hourly--basis...now that's just crazy talk! I can remember a time when I'd shoot a high school basketball game and get a rush if any of the players ...

Iowa High School Basketball Substates: Hire a Professional, Sit Back and Be a Parent! =)

Image
A great read if you're a parent at Dunkerton, North Linn, North Tama, Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Waverly-Shell Rock, Iowa Falls, Waterloo East, Cedar Falls, Western Dubuque, Cedar Rapids Washington, New Hampton, Dike-New Hartford, MFL MarMac or Cascade! Are you tired of trying to take pictures of your son or daughter during some of the biggest games of the year ? Are you tired of your less than stellar point and shoot camera getting less than impressive images of your son or daughter? Do your pictures come out blurry or are the players super tiny because you're about a mile away while trying to take pictures of your kid(s)? If you answered 'Yes' to any one of the questions above then I think it's time you hire me to come to your son or daughter's next game. I'm a photographer that has been photographing sports--high school and  college--for going on 15 years and I have professional training to go along with professional equipment to handle the to...

Photography Education: How Do I Better Do What I Do The Way You Do?!

Image
Haven't you ever wanted to get so great at photography that you get to shoot inside an old camera? Thanks to my buddy Josh for jumping inside this one for this image! I get asked all the time "How do I take better pictures" or "How do I take pictures like you JScott?" or "How do I better do what I do the way you do?". Okay, so I made that last one up. But in all fairness, I think that essentially that's what I'm being asked by photographers of all levels. Before I get started let me make one thing perfectly clear: If you're not a full-time--or even part-time--photographer right now or you're not even charging people for your photography (and even if you are I guess), I'VE BEEN IN YOUR SHOES.  I'VE BEEN that person with a fancy piece of machinery in front of me called a camera and had no idea how to make it work. I'VE BEEN that person watching other photographers' work (even as far back as the days before F...

Four months and one list.

First off, HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2012 was fabulous and I certainly hope that 2013 is even better! As 2013 gets ready to rock and roll, I've begun trying to come up with a list of my business New Year’s resolutions. I’ve never really been a resolution type of guy but have learned while trying to get my photography business up and running, a resolution is nothing more than a goal or something on a to-do list; if you don’t write it down then it never gets done. With that said, here’s a rough list of some of the things on my Photography Resolutions List of 2013: - Blog more . - Blog a lot. - Just blog. Period.   (I bring up blogging because apparently my last blog post dates back to September 21, 2012. That’s no way to keep a blog up-to-date and exciting. My apologies.) - Reach out more to my fans. What is it you’d like to know more about? Would you like me to answer questions about photography on my blog page? - Try new techniques with my photography....

Thoughts on My 1st After Dark

Image
Last week I had the opportunity of a lifetime to attend my first ever After Dark Education  (which I will be referring to as AD the rest of the story) in Kansas City, a quick 5 hour drive from my place. As its website says it's an "experience" as it's "neither a 'conference' nor a 'workshop'; it's the best of BOTH worlds." I had always heard other photographers talk about AD but only knew that it was this mystical sounding thing with superpowers where they kept you up late and forced you to cram in as much learning in as short amount of time as possible. Well, my thoughts were proven correct--except for the superpowers. Flat out, this thing ROCKED! For 72 hours I crammed in as much learning as possible. Topics ranged from ways to market yourself to lighting a high school senior to creating composite images (aka collages with a 21st century feel) to ways to maximize your sales. I was surrounded by some of the best photogr...

Cupcakes and Bar Mitzvahs

Image
Wikipedia defines a Bar Mitzvah as the " Jewish   coming of age   rituals ...  According to  Jewish law , when  Jewish  boys become 13, they become accountable for their actions and become a Bar Mitzvah." ****************************************************************************************** I remember the email. Do you shoot bar mitzvahs? "Um, sure!" I replied. I obviously was not going to say no. I had no clue what I was getting myself into. About three weeks ago I had no idea what a Bar Mitzvah was. To me it was just that party that you see in the movies where they put a kid in a chair and bounce him up and down. I figured it had something to do with religion, I just wasn't quite sure how exactly. With only a few movie scenes and a Wikipedia search under my belt, I threw myself headfirst into one as I was hired to photograph such an event for a wonderful local family. Simply put: I had a blast! The family starting the chair d...

Catching Up on a Few Things (Lengthy!)

Image
First off, thank you for stopping by my blog. As you can probably see it's gone through some overhauls lately. And considering this is my first post since December 2011, it probably needed a little TLC. So, where do I begin? Well, since the last time I put up a post a big event happened! I graduated from the Professional Photography program at Hawkeye College  in Waterloo, Iowa. A very proud 2012 graduate!  This was truly one of my life goals. I had been approved for the program back in the spring of 2000 right before my graduation from high school but got "cold feet" when I saw the cost of equipment. So glad I decided to go back to school! A photo taken from the Professional Photography Program's page on the Hawkeye College website. It's a little outdated but it's still pretty "Schaaaaaaaweet!" I learned so much, some things that I already knew but much more that I didn't. Most importantly, I learned about the drive and dedication ...

Did I just hear my name?

Image
Growing up I couldn't win a prize at a "Win Everytime" carnival game. For some reason I have never been granted with a great amount of luck, or athleticism, or genious, or stunning good looks...this list could go on and on. But knowing this I still chose to enter in a photograph, that I took a few weeks back, into my college's 2011 artshow. Here's the image I submitted: ©2011 JScott Image and Design This was an open themed contest meaning you could submit just about anything you wanted, in just about any medium (photograph, painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.) as long as it was yours and wasn't offensive; those were about the two main criteria. I had never even entered into an artshow before, let alone won anything in any of them. That is why having a print of mine receive a top honor in this show, that I literally snuck into at the last minute, is not only exciting but also very satisfying at the same time! The image (which I hope shows up in this bl...
